Queen @ Springfield Civic Center

Performers: Queen
Date: November 13, 1977
Venue: Springfield Civic Center, MA
Cost of ticket: $7.50

This was an event that I consciously did not want to miss, even though I was not a Queen fan. But I wanted to experience them and I am very glad that I did.

Brain May's guitar is a sort of drug, or medicine, even better.
It is true that the sound of his guitar is very unique, sweet, fulfilling, but really the guy is a genius. So I was glad I saw him play. Freddie was very corrorgraphed in his movements from one side of the stage to the other - very deliberate. Not as smoothly natural, so I am wondering if performing was really his thing? I don’t know maybe not.

The music was powerful. I don’t think there was a backup band or if I just missed them . . .

Linda Ronstatdt @ Tanglewood, MA

Performers: Linda Ronstadt, Bernie Leadon
Date: August 23, 1977
Venue: Tanglewood Performing Arts Center, Lenox MA
cost of ticket: $4.50

So I was right back up to Lenox to see Linda - one of my all time favorite singers back then. And she was with Bernie Leadon, of the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Eagles fame. I don't remember much about this concert, weather I was in the performing arts center "shell" or out on the lawn; hopefully it was a beautiful night.

Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker @ Music Innn, Lenox MA

Performers: Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker
Date: August 20, 1977
Venue: Music Inn, Lenox MA
cost of ticket: $6.50

Does anyone remember Music Inn? What a great place. I saw many concerts here because a friend of mine was living there in one of the out buildings that they had converted over to apartments at the time. A real hippy village.

I am a huge Bonnie Raitt fan at this time, so I enjoyed this concert, probably singing along with most of the songs. This was an outdoor venue, so everyone sat on the lawn of an up-sloped hill.

Dave Mason, Heart @ Springfield Civic Center, MA

Performers: Dave Mason, Heart, Sanford Townshend Band
Date: August 12, 1977
Venue: Springfield Civic Center, MA
cost of ticket: $6.50

If I remember correctly, a lot of the people who came to this concert came for Heart. I was impressed with their professionalism. However, I was not a big fan of the lead singers voice; she never struck me as a singer of rock and roll. Not enough guts. But she has a cultured voice.

YES, Donovan @ Springfield Civic Center, MA

Performers: YES, Donovan
Date: August 10, 1977
Venue: Springfield Civic Center, MA
cost of ticket: $7.50

WOW - I seem to remember this concert vividly, as well - YES was awesome. Maybe too many instrumental solos, but I was blown away. Who can be in the same room with Rick Wakeman and my favorite ANGEL = Jon Anderson whose voice is like "home", and not be transported into the spiritual realm. Even then, at 17 years old, I understood that these musicians were touched by the heavens. . . I still listen to YES, still feel the power/splendor of their music, and thank GOD that I saw them with all their most talented musicians intact.

Oh yes, and Donovan - he is very cool actually. I love this guy, but I have to say, I don't remember much of his performance. Does anyone else out there? Refresh my memory Steven!!!

Dan Fogelberg @ Tanglewood, Lenox MA

Performers: Dan Fogelberg
Date: July 5, 1977
Venue: Tanglewood Performing Arts Center, Lenox MA
cost of ticket: $7.50

Holy hatracks, I remember this concert as if it where just a few years ago. I was only 17 years old, drove up there with two of my best friends; all three of us knew every "Danny" song by heart. Sat there in the Performing Art Center seating area (not out on the lawn) and drank from a large thermal dispensing unit which was filled with lemonaide by my mother. However, on the trip to Lenox, we poured a bottle of rum in it. So now it is very potent. We drank and drank, and sang to every song, which was very annoying to the people around us. Oh my goodness - we were totally out of line - just like punk kids that I see now adays. No manners. Very drunk. Really happy, though - because we LOVED DANNY, and he did need our backing vocals, if I remember correctly.

What a great concert - we all did a fantastic job!

Did you see this concert - were you in the next row and totally annoyed with three drunk young girls? If so, please leave your memories, comments, thoughts and ideas . . . and sorry about that!

Derringer @ Shaboo Inn, Willimantic CT

Performers: Derringer
Date: June 22, 1977
Venue: SHABOO Inn, Willimantic, CT
cost of ticket: $4.50

OK, don't get me started . . . . ooooooowwww I loved this guy. He was so tiny, sweet, and a great guitar player. Did I mention that he was very cute? He was. Just too small for me . . . but hey, those short guys are some of the best guitarists.

I love Rick Derringer. Still do, always will. Rick was under-rated. So I will be his diehard fan till parting.

The Shaboo was a great old barn of a bar, that let me in even though I was not 18 at the time, which was the legal drinking age. I don't remember how I got in, I think I was smiling so hard, so happy to be seeing my sweet teen idol, that they HAD to let me in. I think I even had my Derringer tee shirt on, that I had hand made in high school art class. And I was tall, so that helped. Plus I had my big brother standing right next to me ... kinda like with this look saying "you will let her in" ya know, wink, wink.

Performers: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner, 38 Special
Date: June 15, 1977
Venue: Springfield Civic Center
cost of ticket: ?

Looking back now, this is a pretty strong concert line-up!

I was a terrific Skynyrd fan playing their first album "Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd" till I knew it by heart. I was lucky to see Ronnie Van Zant sing this evening since this concert took place 4 months before the fated plane crash. Lots of band members up on the stage - big, full music. If I remember correctly, like 3 guitar players, all of them capable of playing lead.

Eagles, Jimmy Buffet @ Springfield Civic Center

Performers: Eagles, Jimmy Buffet
Date: March 14, 1977
Venue: Springfield Civic Center
cost of ticket: $8.50

I know that Jimmy appeals to a great many people, but he frustrates me. So I was probably walking around the perrimeter of the civic center for most of his performance.

The Eagle had put out "Hotel California" which is when Joe Walsh came aboard. I was already a huge Joe fan, so I was beaming to see him up there on the stage with the other fine lads - what a fantastic group; some of the finest musicians and songwriters this time period would ever see. Great performers, great energy, a good night to see Joe.

cost of ticket: N/A

Aaaah, a great memory! I went to this concert as a guest to one of the finest people to walk the planet, my brother's friend Jeff. Jeff and I were huge Ronstadt fans, as well as sharing the love for YES.

Not only did Andrew Gold help play in Linda's band, but he had some quality stage time on his own. He had just put out his second album "What's Wrong With This Picture?" which I owned and enjoyed featuring the hit, Lonely Boy.

Date: August 24, 1976
Venue: Springfield Civic Center
cost of ticket: $7

Well right after their buddy Rick Derringer leaves the venue, in comes the Winter Brothers. I have been a Johnny Winter fan now for a few years, so it is a treat to see him with his Brother Edgar. I can't recall much about this show. Perhaps I was wishing that Rick had stayed around, and joined them on stage. . . Say what you will, Edgar is a fine musician, and his varied training and range added luster to this show.

What a treat to see Lynyrd Skynyrd - an entire stagefull of musicians. These guys were all about a fine live performance with high energy and lots of guitar solos.

Aerosmith and Derringer @ Springfield, MA

Performers: Aerosmith, Derringer, Starz
Date: August 12, 1976
Venue: Springfield Civic Center
cost of ticket: $7

Here is a fun one to report and puts a smile on my face. What a strong show for me. I was going to see my buddy, Rick Derringer in his "new band" called Derringer. They were pretty good - he has some strong musicians in his band; lots of long big hair, if I remember correctly. Let me say a bit about Rick. . . he has a great heart for rock and roll, a super voice coming out of his little body, and he can play. I never thought of him as being this great guitarist, however he does have a knack for riff, and his chops are strong and clean. I think that is what I have always liked about Rick Derringer, is that he plays a clean, nice sounding guitar.

Aerosmith rocks! Always fun but professional, as well.

Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Boz Scaggs

Performers: Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Boz Scaggs
Date: July 25, 1976
Venue: Schaeffer Stadium
cost of ticket: $10

Schaeffer/Sullivan/Foxboro Stadium is the home of the New England Patriots in the eastern part of the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts. HUGE PLACE = YUCK. I love the Eagles, so I know I was front and center spirtually to see them, however I don't think I had very good seats! Fleetwood Mac had Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks performing with them by now, so they were hot and very popular.

Peter Frampton @ Hartford, CT

Performers: Peter Frampton
Date: July, 1976

cost of ticket: N/A

Colt Park was a huge outdoor arena in Hartford. Sometimes we would go and just see if we could get in, or perhaps sit up on this hill and listen to the music for free. I don't remember if Peter was traveling without a backup band so he could play his characteristic long show all for himself. The phenomenon "Frampton Comes Alive" album was just released, so we came to experience the live buzz that we all felt on the recording.

The Who, Toots & The Maytalls @ Springfield, MA

Performers: The Who, Toots & The Maytalls
Date: December 14, 1975
Venue: Springfield Civic Center, MA

Here's a good story; one of my best actually . . .because I got physically dragged to this concert by my big brother that INSISTED THAT I GO. So, he bought me a ticket, told me all his cute friends were going to come along, and that I should go because it was THE WHO, goddamit. So I went. And stood about 100 feet from the stage surrounded by my big brother and his big dudes who put me up on their shoulders so I could see.

OK, now what do I really remember? . . . . ahhh, that Keith Moon was seriously a basket case. That I hate it when Pete smashes his guitar; always have - always will. And that the real gentleman of the group was Uncle John. I was NOT a Roger Daltrey fan when I walked in, so actually that's why I did not really want to go. However, by the end of the night I had a well tempered respect for Daltrey for the power and range of his performing stamina.

It was a very good thing my brother did - dragging me to this concert - I saw The Who at a critical time in their hay day, before Keith checked out.

Linda Ronstadt, Leo Kotke @ Tanglewood, MA

Performers: Linda Ronstadt, Leo Kottke
Date: August 29, 1975
Venue: Tanglewood Performing Arts Center, Lenox Massachusetts
cost of ticket: N/A

I was very excited about seeing Linda live. I had mostly all of her albums to date, and was curious how she would perform. Linda did a wonderful job of putting out song after song, not much talk in between, and hitting all the notes. The sleeper was the fact that she had Andrew Gold with her, and he is very talented in his own right. He was her guitarist, which gave that distinct sound that he has, and also back up in vocals, so this show was memorably strong.

But the real hero was Kottke. I had never really heard of him, me being only the age of 15 at the time. And he was splendid.
